A New Method for Characterization of Natural Zeolites and Organic Nanostructure using Atomic Force Microscopy Nature Precedings
Domenico P. R. O. F. Fuoco.
In order to study and develop an economic solution to environmental pollution in water, a wide variety of materials were investigated. Natural zeolites emerge from that research as the best in class of this category. Zeolites are natural materials relatively abundant and non biodegradable, economic and good to perform processes of environmental remediation. This paper contains a full description of a new method to characterize superficial properties of natural zeolites of exotic provenience (Caribbean Islets) with atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM works with the optical microscope simplicity and the high resolution typical of a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Structural information of mesoporous material is obtained using scanning and transmission...

A new outlook towards kidney injuries Nature Precedings
Mahesh Satwekar; Abhijeet Satwekar.
Acute and chronic progression of injury to the kidney leads to the failure of the renal system and has become an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality. Present diagnosis detects the condition only after irreversible loss of 70 percent of kidney function. Current research is focused only on the clinical manifestations after the kidney injuries and not towards the exact cause of the condition. Here we propose a new outlook- that there is an involvement of a pathogen in the pathogenesis of kidney injuries. Basis for our proposal is given by the similarity of the pathogenesis events occurring between a classical example of hepatitis and kidney injuries. Furthermore, literature regarding the role of early kidney injury biomarkers in innate...

A new species of Asplenium section Thamnopteris (Aspleniaceae) from Indonesia Naturalis
Dong, S.Y.; Mujahidin; Wei, L.L.; Chao, Y.S..
A new species, Asplenium riswanii (sect. Thamnopteris), is described from Central Java and West Papua, Indonesia. It is distinct from any known species by having thick and rigid fronds, abaxially keeled midribs, broadly lanceolate scales, and distantly spaced sori. Morphologically, A. riswanii is not similar to any species from Malesia but somewhat close to A. antrophyoides from mainland Southeast Asia. Molecular data reveal it has an isolated position in the phylogeny. The micromorphology of spores and leaf epidermis of A. riswanii is also documented and a key to the species of Asplenium sect. Thamnopteris from Malesia is given.

A new species of Campylothorax (Collembola: Entomobryoidea: Paronellidae) from the state of Alagoas, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bellini,Bruno Cavalcante; Meneses,Liugo Fernando.
Campylothorax Schött, 1893 is a genus of Paronellidae known only from the Neotropical and Ethiopian zoogeographic provinces. Herein a new species of this genus is described and illustrated. Campylothorax mitrai sp. nov. was found in remains of Atlantic Rainforest at Rio Largo municipality, state of Alagoas, Brazil. It is the ninth described species of Campylothorax and the third recorded from Brazil. Campylothorax mitrai sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its peculiar dark blue color pattern associated to a unique set of setae in the labial triangle, where there is a large distinct seta 'E'. This condition is unique among Campylothorax species. Campylothorax mitrai sp. nov. is the first record of Collembola from Alagoas.

A new species of Cyrtoneuropsis (Diptera: Muscidae) with considerations on the phylogeny of the genus Rev. Bras. Zool.
Haseyama,Kirstern L.F.; Carvalho,Claudio J.B. de.
We describe a new species of Cyrtoneuropsis Malloch, 1925 (Diptera, Muscidae) from Brazil. The new species is included in a previously published key to species. Additionally, we review a previously published matrix to Cyrtoneurina Giglio-Tos, 1893 and Cyrtoneuropsis. A total of 52 character states were modified and the new species was added to it. The modified matrix was analyzed under equal and implied weights. In all topologies, Cyrtoneuropsis spiloptera (Wiedemann, 1830) came up as the sister group of the new species. The monophyly of Cyrtoneurina and Cyrtoneuropsis were recovered, but the relationships among their species, in our data, differ from those obtained in the past.

A new species of Lemmermanniella (Cyanobacteria) from the Atlantic Rainforest, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Gama Junior,Watson Arantes; Azevedo,Maria Teresa de Paiva; Komárková-Legnerová,Jaroslava; Sant'anna,Célia Leite.
The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest is a highly heterogeneous ecosystem comprising large numbers of tropical and subtropical habitats favorable to the development of cyanobacteria. Studies on cyanobacteria in this ecosystem are still rare, however, especially those involving unicellular and colonial types. The high biodiversity and endemism of this biome has been extremely impacted and fragmented, and less than 10% of its original vegetation cover remains today. We describe here a new species of a colonial cyanobacteria, Lemmermanniella terrestris, found on dry soils in a subtropical region of the Atlantic Rainforest in the municipality of Cananéia in southern São Paulo State, Brazil. This new taxon demonstrated all of the diacritical features of the genus...

A new species of Leporinus Agassiz, 1829 from the upper Rio Paraná basin (Characiformes, Anostomidae) with redescription of L. elongatus Valenciennes, 1850 and L. obtusidens (Valenciennes, 1837) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Britski,Heraldo A.; Birindelli,José Luís O.; Garavello,Julio Cesar.
Leporinus obtusidens Valenciennes, 1837 and L. elongatus Valenciennes, 1850 are redescribed based on the type specimens, including those of their junior synonyms, and recently collected specimens. Leporinus obtusidens is considered to be widespread, occuring in the river drainages of La Plata, São Francisco, and Parnaíba. Leporinus aguapeiensis Campos, 1945, described from the upper Rio Paraná, and L. silvestrii Boulenger, 1902, described from the Rio Paraguay, are considered junior synonyms of L. obtusidens. Leporinus elongatus is endemic to the Rio Jequitinhonha and Rio Pardo, two eastern Brazilian river basins, and the locality cited for the lectotype, Rio São Fransico, likely to be erroneous. Leporinus crassilabris Borodin, 1929, and L. crassilabris...
